MTU

Postby nick87 » 10 Mar 2010, 17:24

Hey,

I've just downloaded TCP Optimizer and it told me I can set this to 1492. Just wondering what MTU affects or if its worth changing.

THanks

Depending on what OS you have, it doesn't work with Vista/Windows 7, it can make big difference to your dowload speeds. You can always try it and change it back if it doesn't improve things.

TCP optimizer is set to configure ppoe , nontheless it's useful tool .

best way UK , is to try pinging BBC.com with various paket sizes untill you get packet loses then step back one, although I have found nothing wrong with Xp's default setting , MTU size had a big impact on win98 and M.E , ( for 56k dial up ) , Xp, Vista, and win 7 seem to have got it tamed ,
I started out with nothin , and I still got most of it left !

Yeah, I have Windows XP. I have it set at 1500 currently so I'll change it and give it a whirl. Thanks for the reply ;-)

To change MTU on windows 7 open a command prompt and type
netsh interface ipv4 show subinterfaces
to change it , type netsh interface ipv4 set subinterface "Local Area Connection" mtu=1478 store=persistent

You can change the 1478 to what ever you want , but 1478 seems to work well :)
