Connection problems / question about BT phone socket.

Postby korvars » 09 Feb 2010, 00:59

Hello, I'll try to keep this brief but it may end a little long since I want to give a little backstory.

I moved to a new property about 6 weeks ago now, and have had connection problems ever since.

The line can allegedly support up to 2MB, the VAST majority of the time (95%+), i've only had ~0.1-0.15MB downstream.
I'm 440metres from the exchange according do the dslzoneuk test, and a relative lives 5 doors down from me and has more than fine connection speeds.

I've been in contact with my ISP (newnet) for the past couple of weeks, all tests run by them and BT have shown that there's no problems on their end. I've tried multiple routers, including a brand new one i purchased & microfilters etc, with no result. Positive everything is set up correctly (nothing had changed in set up between moving houses, until buying a new router).

As for my real question, today I came across the "improve your speed" part of this website about the phone socket wiring. Just now I took off the front plate, and there's NO wiring connected at all, it's just stuffed into the back of the socket not doing anything.

I suspect this may be the cause, but unsure since I still get a connection without it. I thought I'd ask before touching anything!

Thats normal if you have no extension sockets! could you post your router stats up so we can see whats going on ? that may shed some light on the situation!!

I take it you have an adsl filter fitted ? if not that could be the problem but i would say it looks like a line fault as you have no extensions!

Yes, I have an adsl filter fitted.

edit: I assume by extensions you mean extra phone sockets? I use an extension wire to the router upstairs, i've tried without it and had no improvement regardless.

BT have refused the suggestion that it is a line fault so far, despite their own "speedtester" tool i was instructed to use clearly showing there is a problem.
i should be called back by my ISP again tomorrow as he's doing some other kind of test, but he said BT will start charging £44 for each after this one, need to find a solution!

Well with that attenuation and that noise margin, with no extensions i would say its a line fault..... as long as the problem is not with any wiring from the master socket they can't charge you..... so if you have no extensions and you haven't damaged the wire coming in to your property you won't get charged!

I ran a bt speedtester test and noticed my IP profile is a fair bit lower than it 'should' be (to my knowledge its usually ~500kpbs less than downstream):

Your DSL Connection Rate :1792 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 128 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 135 Kbps

Could the problem be a "stuck" profile at BT's end? The actual download speeds I get is 10-13kilobyte/s so it seems to fit together.

Yeah but your DSL connection rate should be 8128 !!! its a line fault and the low IP profile is part of the problem ! your IP profile should be 7150 not 135 !! the best profile you would get is 1500 with a sync of 1792 i think it could be 1250..... i've not been on BT for a few years...... and i can't say i miss em lolol, you need to get newnet to stop threatening you with charges and get them to get BT to fix the issue!!!!!

Okay, thanks for clarifying!

The maximum connection rate around here is 2MB anyway, can't actually get 8MB, so i'd be content with 1790! (at least this is what all of the line/exchange tests say)

I'll be sure to get the guy who phones me tomorrow (if he phones me, last time he said he'd call back in an hour and it was 3days later :)) to get this IP profile fixed.

Thanks for your time!

With your line stats you can get a full 8mbps sync !!!!! that 2mbps is for the fixed speed adsl not adsl max!! don't settle for what you have its far from what you are paying for !!!!! do you not have any llu providers @ your exchange ??? My line is nearly 3 times worse than yours and i get 4mbps !!!!!

I don't have ADSL max, so I must have the 2mbps for fixed speed adsl!

I had no idea how good my line was, and found out that the exchange is literally a 2minute walk down the road aswell!

I'll definately upgrade to ADSL max after this IP profile is fixed!
