Broadband? That'll be £45,000 (please).

Postby Kansenji » 08 Feb 2010, 21:08

MAIL ONLINE ARTICLE EXCERPT:

A couple who want a broadband connection for their home and guesthouse business have been told by BT it will cost £45,000 to have it installed.

Ray and Frei Walker have managed with an old 'dial-up' service for the last nine years at their detached Victorian home in Dufton, Cumbria. But when they decided to change it up for high-speed broadband they were hit with the massive quote from British Telecom.

The company said the high price is to cover the cost of new equipment which it admits could also be accessed by others in the village.

At present there is BT broadband access for the 150 villagers in Cumbria but the company says there is no more capacity for new users. . . .

. . . The Walkers' home in Cumbria is just ten yards from a telephone pole next door to other residents already with broadband.

Ray, 60, said: 'It's a farce, and obviously we're staggered. We don't have £45,000 and if we did we wouldn't spend it on this.'

They say the slowness of the dial-up service is affecting their business and the work of Mrs Walker and their daughter Megan who are both teachers who need to access resource material on the internet.

'We just want the same c**p broadband service as everybody else in the village but BT won't even let us have that.'

So get 3G broadband then ;)

EDIT: Or string up the 4.5KM of copper across 900 poles yourself! And de-install the DACS. Right then, thought not.

I genuinely feel sorry for the guy, it should be a basic BT requirement to supply broadband to every home in the UK.

Why BT? Don't forget that thanks to Thatcher and her cronies it is now a private company and is no more obliged to supply broadband to every household than say virgin or sky or plusnet etc

Yea, I know that Steve, and I agree with you, I just feel that BT seemed to be the obvious choice with their widespread resources Openreach etc.

The poor guy and others in a similar situation should not be faced with this in 2010.

Or buy the nice knabours a posh new wireless N router, offer to upgrage the bb package and split the costs appropriately. Say nothing to the provider.

Yes, HALF of 500kbs (when the neighbours are using it too) is still about five times faster than dial-up, and it would mean both sets of neighbours could use their telephones at the same time as being online. :)

Alternatively, they could organise a rota, so that everyone gets the full 500kbs speed for 12 hours each day/night. :)

Oh, (bragging for once) I've just bought a "posh" new ZyXel wireless-N (+b+g) router; it even has a wireless on/off button to save energy if only using a wired connection (or when everyone has gone to bed). :D

Yes I do remember dial up. I still use it to keep my old BT account live.......... What I do feel is if the dial up connection was not effectively shared with 50 millions others, dial up would work a lot better. I firmly believe dial up is deliberately degraded to force people onto broadband, and when they are, not to notice how pathetic their broadband connection speed is.................
