FYI - Max Upgrades

Postby pointdee » 11 Apr 2006, 12:51

For all people being upgraded to Max please read the following regarding the capping issue after upgrade.

The issue appears to be where a line is connected to a router and so on-line when the regrade actually happens, BT do not recognise the new line sync as being from a Max line (it's too quick). Later re-syncs at the same rate do not prompt BT to take any action either. This means the normal 75 minutes for a new or regraded line does not happen. The line should have the rate correctly set after 3 days. The reason some lines appear to work is that they are either slow to reconnect, not on-line during the regrade, or sync at a different rate later. Ironically this does mean that really good lines that always sync at a full 8128M are unlikely to have the speed change applied promptly.

The upshot of which is that if you are going to be upgraded turn your router off overnight.

[Addendum] - Another feature of the upgrade to Max is that your SNR will drop, possibly to single figures. This is normal and to be expected as a result of the upgrade.

so basically, if I wanna get my upgrade, I need to switch my router off, otherwise it won't go?

Yep. It will go eventually but may take several days.

The upgrades take place overnight so you should switch off your router in the evening and switch it back on in the morning. You "should" then get the full rate possible for your line.

Ah nuts, but night is when I have my torrents (Fully legal, stuff such as linux distros etc :P), running.

And according to plusnet I should get it upgraded today, so no chance of it happening during the day?

So I should've had it off last night? Damnit. I'll need to have it off tonight.

Thank god I got that 56k modem to use, a night without the internet?! Unthinkable!

One thing though, you say overnight. Roughly what time does that consist of? After midnight?

Turning it off tonight won't help if you've already been upgraded. The router has to be off when the regrade happens, subsequent resyncs have no effect.

I've heard 3am and 5am but can't say for sure.

But I haven't been upgraded, I'm still on 2Mbit, so I have to turn it off tonight then?

My upgrade was scheduled for Monday and happened early Monday morinig.

You say you are still on 2Mbit but what are you synced at? If you are synced at a higher rate but only getting 2Mbit then you are being capped within BTs network. If not then yes, turn your router off overnight.

Don't know off the top of my head as I've never used a Netgear ????? router. Google for your specific model and you should be able to find out. The Statistics page is mentioned for some Netgear routers.

My friend is with plusnet and he got told his upgrade was last week around the 6th april, he got an email confirmation that roughly read "if he had the email he was upgraded"

He waited a few days and nothing he has since contacted plusnet who said that it was there mistake and that they were having problems getting there customers upgraded and that it was looking like he would have to wait until bt made there "BULK ORDER TOOL" or something like that available at the end of april he would have to accept there apoligies and wait.

Maybe its worth calling them (if you have an hour to spend waiting to get through) to see if thats whats happened to you.

Is that a sign of a good line then the sync rate, I have sync`d at D/S 8128 and U/S 448 since day 1 and it doesnt ever drop and its never changed.

I seem to be a bit unsure as to whether anything is even happening on my line.
The only thing for sure is that my download speeds are all over the place anywhere from up at 800.50kb/s down to 200kb/s.

They are never stable speeds though.

I just want some stability in my life then I will be happy

In a nutshell - Maybe.

Apparently the line monitoring kicks in after the first couple of days and after 10 days determines the max stable rate and sets your sync to this unless you are having many disconnects in which case it kicks in much sooner so it would seem that your sync rate may get lowered in a few days to the value that BTs kit decides will give you a stable connection.

Well I just wish it would do something, Im at the end of day 6 and nothings happened so far, my ISP has said that it can register a fault with BT regarding the speeds being erratic but only after the 10 days have passed.

Pointdee are You on Max DSL? Have you noticed any change in your sync rate, infact have you noticed anything happening?

If my snyc rate came down and my line stablised I would be happy, anything above 4.5mb and I will be happy because thats what I expected I would get from the results the checker gave me 4.5 and above
